New routes
These routes are not waymarked on the ground, except for the usual rights of way markers and are not for the faint hearted. Not got a GPS? Download and plot onto an OS map. Maps available from Holey Trail bike shop in Machynlleth. Trampled under foot. 28 miles, 1164 m climbing. Big views on this one, starts off heading south and then swings round past Glaslyn, over the mountain road before big descents to Tal-y-Wern. One more climb, before hurtling down to Penegoes, and back into Machynlleth from the East. Misty mountain hop. 7.5 miles, 900 m climbing. Ride/push/carry your bike to the top of Cader Idris, and then storm back down on an out and back ride. This route deliberately steers clear of the paths used by most walkers, but the top section is shared, so please don't squash anyone. Carouselambra. 15 miles, 1086 m climbing. Takes in the best of the cli-machx trail in the Dyfi forest, but with lots of steep and scary extras, many of which are used in the annual Dyfi Enduro Over the Hills n Far Away.41 miles, 1390m climbing. This route takes you over the open moorland of the Hyddgen (site of a famous Welsh battle), past Nant y Moch reservoir and across to Nant yr Arian. Includes a quick spin round some of the purpose built trail at Nant (and the opportunity for tea and cake at the visi centre), before the return leg. Gallows Pole. 11 miles, 611m climbing. Incorporates some of the best of Mach 2 and 3, with an alternative ending.
